Compare the same work
Two totals are not comparable unless they cover the same outcome. Check dimensions, quantities, materials, preparation, drainage connections, disposal and restoration. Ask for clarification where a description is broad or an allowance is used.
Separate known work from investigation

Make exclusions visible
Discuss taxes, approvals, specialist design, access requirements and items left to the homeowner. Ask how additional work will be priced and authorized. A written change process is more useful than assuming nothing unexpected can happen underground.
Look beyond the cheapest total
Consider how clearly the contractor explains the work, the expected sequence and the communication arrangements. Ask what completion means, which restoration is included and what aftercare or warranty terms apply to your specific project. Do not assume a standard warranty or guaranteed finish date unless it is written into the agreement.
